Panda Express: History
The parent company of Panda Express is the Panda Restaurant Group. The company was founded 37 years ago in 1983 by Andrew Cherng and Peggy Cherng. Andrew came into the business with his father, Master Chef Ming Tsai Cherng, who opened their first Panda Inn restaurant in 1973 in Pasadena, California.
While opening the restaurant in the U.S., the Chinese family faced many obstacles as it didn’t get a massive response from audiences. Later they attracted customers with special deals and freebies. After 2000 the company largely grew.
As of 2017, the Panda Restaurant Group had annual sales of over $3 billion and close to 39,000 employees.
